April - War begins with first shots fired at Battles of Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts.
May - Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold capture Fort Ticonderoga and Lake Champlain in New York.
June - Battle of Bunker Hill (Breed's Hill), Massachusetts. Siege of Boston begins. Continental Congress names George Washington commander in chief of the Continental army. .
July - George Washington assumes command of the Continental army in Cambridge, Massachusetts
September - American forces under Richard Montgomery and Benedict Arnold begin the invasion of Canada.
December - Battle of Quebec, Richard Montgomery killed.
